Get the Right Alternators for 87-90, 90-92 VW Cabriolets, Golfs, Jettas
In April 1998, Precision Parts introduced a new part number, BOS821. This unit fits some applications formerly assigned to BOS820. This would be a good time to review the reasons for adding BOS821 to PPR's line. This is an instance where selling and installing the correct unit prevents MAJOR damage to the vehicle. First, here are the applications for BOS820 and BOS821.

Please note that BOS820 and BOS821 share the same Bosch PN, 0 001 212 400, 401. This is quite unusual from an OE manufacturer, but that is the way it happened. For this reason, correct unit identification must be done as described in the following.
BOS821 applications start at VIN 1GLW746848. On cars built before October 1990 (pre-VIN 1GLW746848), BOS820 is the correct starter, provided the car has the original flywheel/flex plate.
For cars with a revised VW flywheel and shim kit, BOS821 is correct for the car, regardless of the production date.
The revised flywheel is visually different, resembling a spoke steering wheel. The flywheel before October 1990 is a solid disc.
