Toyotas
Jumped Timing Belt - Toyotas with 5 MGE DOHC Engine
| Symptoms: |
The car is very hard to start and/or may only run at RPM. Sounds like a vacuum leak, right? Maybe not.
|
| Problem: |
It could be a jumped timing belt. Sometimes the belt on these engines will only jump on the exhaust cam. This causes the engine to run as if it has a large vacuum leak. Check for correct valve timing to be sure.
|
| Cure: |
Reset the belt with the following procedure:
- Remove the upper timing cover. The steel power steering lines may be in the way, but it is not necessary to remove them. They can be bent out of the way by LIGHTLY pushing them with a pry bar. Please use caution.
- Realign the timing marks.
- Set belt tension.
- Turn the engine over twice by hand. the belt tension will probably change after this, so...
- Set belt tension again.
- Reassemble.
|
| Note: |
Of course, if the belt has already seen more than its recommended share of mileage, we recommend replacing it.
