1990 Nissan Trucks - Intermittent Grinding Noise
Some 1990 Nissan Trucks with 2WD and a column shift automatic transmission may exhibit an intermittent starter grinding noise during engine startup. (Bosch p/n SR2242X). Before condemning any replaced components, it is important that the adjustment of the inhibitor switch (otherwise known as a neutral safety switch) and the manual control linkage adjustments are correct.
To check the inhibitor switch adjustment, you must:
- first remove the manual control linkage from the manual shaft of the automatic transmission assembly
- set the manual shaft of the automatic transmission assembly to the neutral position
- loosen the inhibitor switch fixing bolts
- Insert a 4 mm (.016") diameter pin into the adjustment holds in both the inhibitor switch and the manual shaft of the automatic transmission assembly as near vertical as possible
- tighten the inhibitor switch fixing bolts, and reinstall any parts previously removed
- check the continuity of the inhibitor switch
TO ADJUST THE MANUAL CONTROL LINKAGE:
- place the gear shift lever in the "P" range
- loosen both lock nuts
- tighten lock nut "A" (top nut) until it touches the trunion, pulling the selector lever toward the "R" range side without pushing the button on the gear shift lever
- back off lock nut "A" two turns and tighten lock nut "B" (lower nut) to the specified torque of 11-15 Nm or 8-11 ft. lb.
- move the selector lever from the "P" range to "1" range, making sure that the selector lever can move smoothly.
