Mazda 626-Hard Start when Cold

Sporadic on Mazda 626's

Symptoms: Vehicle won't start during extremely cold weather conditions. This condition usually occurs when the car has been driven for a short period of time and then stopped for 30 to 60 minutes. The car then becomes difficult to re-start

Probable Cause: This condition has been found to be caused by frost forming on the No. 1 and 2 main relay contacts.

Corrective Action: To prevent this condition from occurring again an improved type moisture-proof relay has been established by Mazda (Part # B630-18-811). The relay harness should be un-clipped from the old relay, and attached to the engine harness. When this is complete the harness should be secured with a wire tie to ensure that the connector faces downward, as this will prevent water entering the connector.

from:  NPro19, re cold starting '98 626 V-6

Our 626 would not start when cold, 30 degree or so and frost on the car, otherwise worked fine.  Problem started in 1999, but the dealer could never get car NOT to start, even after several overnight stays.  We showed them your relay fix and they did that and it seemed to work.  This winter at first frost - No Start.  Took the car in and it started every time, but after pulling the car inside the bay they attempted to move it, but it never started again.  Problem was a failed fuel pump relay which you could hear clattering when trying to start the car.  This may save a lot of down time for someone!
