Bosch Cabin Filters: OE Fit and Performance

Automotive cabin air filtration first appeared as early as 1939, but it wasn't until the mid-1980's that European auto manufacturers refined the concept and seriously brought it to market. In the mid-1990's, U.S. manufacturers began equipping selected models with cabin filters, and by the end of 2000, they were standard equipment on over 16 million domestic vehicles. In 2005, 60% of new domestic vehicles will come equipped with cabin filters.

CABIN FILTERS PROVIDE SEVERAL IMPORTANT BENEFITS:

  • Trap harmful pollutants before they reach a vehicle's interior
  • Provide cleaner air to allergy and asthma sufferers
  • Protect the HVAC system's downstream components

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF BOSCH CABIN FILTERS: PARTICULAR FILTERS AND ACTIVATED CHARCOAL FILTERS.

Particulate filters are made of premium quality materials with meticulous attention to design detail and block virtually 100% of harmful solid contaminants. The filters feature a multi-layer design with 3 layers of superior mold-resistant filtration media, delivering maximum performance and durability.

  1. Pre-filter of special non-woven media captures larger contaminant particles.
  2. Electrostatically charged microfiber layer attracts and holds elusive smaller particles.
  3. Cover layer of special non-woven filter media adds stability to protect the microfiber layer from damage and acts as an additional barrier to harmful contaminants.
  4. More pleats provide greater surface area for higher filtration capacity.
  5. Foam perimeter gasket (where specified by O.E.) prevents harmful particles from by-passing the filter media.
  6. Injection-molded frame (where specified by O.E.) with foam perimeter gaskets adds stability for peak performance and long service life.

Activated Charcoal Filters are two-stage cabin filters with all the same characteristics of particulate fibers, and they even go one step better.

An additional layer of activated charcoal absorbs harmful gasses and their odors. Harmful microscopic contaminants in the air, thousands of times smaller than a human hair, can aggravate allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions. The activated charcoal filters remove these particles before they enter a vehicle's ventilation system, keeping passengers and downstream HVAC components protected.

Specifically, activated charcoal filters capture

  • 100% of all particles larger than 3 microns in diameter
  • 99% of particles 1.0-3.0 microns
  • 93% of particles .5-1.0 microns
  • 64% of all particles .3-.5 microns
