Air Conditioning
Preventing Air Conditioning System Failures II
- Always replace the receiver/drier or accumulator whenever system is open for repairs.
- Always use the proper drier for your refrigerant. (XH-5 -- R12 only; XH-7 -- R12 or R134a; XH-9 -- R12, R134a, and other refrigerants)
- Always use Ester Oil with R134a systems.
- Always add two (2) ounces of oil to an ACCUMULATOR when replaced.
- Always add one (1) ounce of oil to a RECEIVER/DRIER when replaced.
- Always check the amount of oil in a new compressor prior to installation.
- Always check condenser fan and interior fan for proper functioning.
- Always check for proper voltage to clutch. (Low voltage can cause slipping which can lead to failure of compressor due to heat buildup.)
- Always rotate compressor gently by hand five or six times before installation. (This reduces the risk of liquid oil damaging valves.)
- Always cap the system when a component is removed. (Ester oils absorb water at an incredible rate and capping system reduces chances of contamination.)
- Always check o-rings for swelling or disfigurement. (Swollen o-rings are good indicator of contamination.)
- Always purchase oil in single-serving containers. (This ensures the integrity of the oil has not been compromised by the absorption of water or other contaminants.)
- Always find the cause of an A/C system failure. (Very few compressors actually "go bad" - a failed compressor is typically the result of some other system problem. The primary cause of all compressor failures is lubricant associated.)
